General Robert E Lee faced of with General George McClellan on September 17, 1862. This war was the bloodiest one day war with about 26000 men dead. Also, it was the first major battle at Antietam Creek.
It is significant for its importance to the Cherokee Nation. The Battle of Chickamauga changed the course of the civil war nearly. This battle was one of the biggest abttle ever fought in Georgia. With 34,000 it is acceoted as the second bloodest war with the first was the Battle of Gettysburge. There was a campaign that started in late June that brought the union and confederate army to Chickamauga. General Rosecrans's had a goal to capture the city of Chattanooga, Tennessee.
Georgia in the battle between ship and shore was a pivotal part of the Union strategy to suddue the state. President Lincoln called for a naval blockade at the beginning of the war. In the state of Georgia all or almost all of the union strategy centered on Savannah. When Confederate President Jefferson Davis Appointed General Robert E. Lee, he found the impossibility of defending the entire coastline. The people of Savannah and also the Confederate leadership had hope rested against the Union occupation and breaking the blockade.
In the article it states that" Atlanta Campaign is a name given by historians to the military operation that took place in North Georgia." Most of the southern Confederates started to give up hope of winning in the early 1860's. In one of the strategy's it required General Lee to protect the capital of Virginia, which is Richmond. Also General Johnston had to keep General Sherman's union from driving south and stop from capturing Atlanta.
This march was the most destructivew campaign against a population of civilians. It started in the city of Atlanta and ended on December 21 in Savannah. General Sherman made his way to the Atlantic Ocean abandoning his supply line to prove to the people of the Confederate that its government could not be protected. In the article it states that Sherman said' This may not be war but rather statesmanship. Sherman began to make preparations to change the base to the coast after capturing Atlanta on September 2, 1864. After he captured Atlanta he refected the Unions plan to move to Alabama.
The Andersonville Prison was a confederate which was established in Macon County. By the summer of 1864 had the largest prison population at its time. The prison was made to hold 10,000 but after it was build more tan 30,000 swelled in it. Once the war was ending Captain Wirz and another officer were arrested for trying to separately from war crimes by federal military.
